Learning outcomes
This teaching block focuses on the study and interpretation of media content in various formats, including text, images, sound, and video. Students will acquire a range of analytical tools and techniques that enable them to empirically examine not only media content itself but also the functioning of media in contemporary society and the ways in which media shape public opinion. Emphasis is placed on understanding how media messages are constructed, distributed, and interpreted within different social and cultural contexts. Students will become familiar with key qualitative and quantitative approaches to media analysis and with the individual stages of the analytical process, such as content coding and data interpretation. As part of the course, students will conduct their own case studies, which help them apply theoretical knowledge to real examples from the media environment and to specific research questions. Graduates of the course will gain the ability to critically evaluate and analyse media content not only with regard to current media legislation but also in relation to the ethical dilemmas that are often associated with the functioning of media. Within the course, students will gain: * basic knowledge of selected issues related to social justice and social inequality * the ability to search for, update, reflect on, and interpret knowledge from the field of media studies * the ability to apply ethical principles and cultural paradigms when studying and interpreting issues related to social justice and social inequality * the ability to process and present reflected topics through various forms of media communication.

The block is completed with a **course credit and an examination**. A student who has not fulfilled the requirements for obtaining the course credit cannot take the examination. Students obtain the course credit through continuous work during the semester. The requirements for obtaining the credit for the theoretical part of the block must be fulfilled by the end of the lecture part of the semester (31 March). The awarding of the credit is agreed upon by the instructors of both parts of the block. Students must meet the requirements set for both the theoretical and the practical part of the block. Obtaining the course credit is conditioned by three interrelated tasks: i) Implementation of an empirical semester project and its presentation at the scheduled date/time (during the last two teaching weeks) in class. ii) Preparation for classes. iii) Successful completion of two knowledge tests. More detailed specifications of the tasks ? see NEO. The examination will take place during the examination period in the form of a presentation and defense of the semester paper, which contains both a theoretical and a practical part. The semester paper must be submitted by the student by the specified deadline before the public defense. The theoretical part of the semester paper (approximately 8,000 words) has the structure of a scholarly article and meets the criteria of an academic text. If a student has not completed the course and is enrolled in it again, they must meet all the requirements set for obtaining both the course credit and the examination unless otherwise agreed with the instructor at the beginning of the semester. **PRACTICAL EXERCISES** **1. Media Output ? Photography Exercise** The assignment for the practical media output in photography consists of creating a photographic series on a topic related to the focus of the theoretical paper. The topic must be consulted with and approved by the workshop instructor in advance. The output is a series of 10?15 photographs. **2. Media Output ? Radio and Text** In the summer semester, the task will be to produce a written STORY of 2,000?2,200 characters including spaces. The story will be a portrait of a selected respondent and will present a short segment of their life related to the topic of the theoretical paper. In the case of an audio output, the assignment will be a **radio feature/reportage montage** with a maximum duration of 5 minutes. The selected sounds do not have to correspond exactly to the textual content. In the montage, the author alternates studio commentary with clips from the respondent and gradually reveals to listeners the reasons behind the respondent?s profession, decisions, or dilemmas. In this format, a compelling narrative ? a **deep human story (HLP)** ? works particularly well. **3. Media Output ? Multimedia Exercise** The student will design and implement a multimedia project that synergistically combines different media possibilities related to the given topic. The expected output is a website that includes a spectrum of audiovisual materials, photographs, texts, and graphic elements. The student will be the author of all individual components. The exercises will take place in the form of practical workshops. Selected exercises will be supervised by the course guarantor. Within the course, each student selects a different type of media output for each thematic block from the current offer so that they gradually gain experience working with different media formats. **How to choose the appropriate exercise for the block:** [https://teologicka.neolms.eu/group_custom/show/28941](https://teologicka.neolms.eu/group_custom/show/28941)
