Global virtual teams are a phenomenon that is becoming increasingly prevalent in professional environments, and the COVID-19 pandemic has further reinforced the importance of this way of working. Global virtual teams, i. e., the teams that are geographically and culturally distributed and use information and communication technologies to communicate, are now a commonplace part of the global knowledge economy. However, closely related to the global environment is the interaction between different national cultures. The set of knowledge, skills, and behavioral elements that enable such interaction is referred to as intercultural competencies. The intercultural competencies of the members of global virtual teams are considered to be one of the factors for their successful performance of global virtual teams.
This dissertation aims to analyze how important intercultural competencies are for organizations in managing global virtual teams. The dissertation is structured in a linear way, starting with the definition of the aim of the thesis. This is followed by a literature review that examines the theoretical background and the current state of knowledge. Based on the conceptual elements identified in the review of the theoretical background and the current state of knowledge, a conceptual framework is constructed, which provides a starting point for the formulation of the main research question and sub-research questions. Primary data for answering the research questions are collected through a questionnaire survey by reaching out to professionals working in global virtual teams. In this questionnaire survey, valid data were collected from 120 respondents. The collected data is then analyzed using selected statistical methods and interpreted in relation to the research questions.
The results of the dissertation research show that organizations generally consider intercultural competence to be important for the successful functioning of their global virtual teams and apply a range of measures to develop the intercultural competence of global team members. However, the perceived importance of intercultural competences may vary depending on specific situations and the organizational roles of individuals. In this context, the research confirms the specific role of the leader in a global virtual team. Furthermore, the findings of this research can serve as a foundation for subsequent studies, as well as inform the professional practice of education and training for individuals operating in global environments.
