The thesis "Depiction of Women in Contemporary American Hip-hop Culture", mainly
focused on how female artists self-depict themselves and their bodies in this male dominated
music industry over the past 20 years. This thesis connects both cultural studies of the
tendencies in Hip-hop and rap and also literature analysis of rap lyrics and shows the
progressions in the understanding of the concept of female body in this genre.

This bachelor thesis aims to examine the image of female body and identity in contemporary American hip-hop culture and music. Alongside the cultural analysis, the thesis works with lyrics of both underground and mainstream artists, comparing their changing tendencies in approach to women during the period from 2000 to 2020.
