The main objective of this doctoral thesis is a verification of the usability of 3D printing technology in geoinformatics, especially for its visualization abilities and representation of real phenomena. Thesis presents the author's approach of possible alternatives for various 3D printing solutions in the field of study. The principal motivation for the doctoral thesis was about the testing of acceptable innovative data representation through the modern technologies and their implementation in the field of geoinformatics. The work answers primary research questions: 1. Is it possible to use 3D printing technology in the field of geoinformatics? If so, in what way. 2. Is it possible to consider the 3D printing technology as a new method for geo data visualization? The main objective of this thesis was divided into three sub-objectives in order to confirm (or reject) the hypothesis. The first sub-objective documents current trends in 3D printing in geoinformatics and their perspectives. The second partial goal focuses on possible applications in the field of visualization of relief and 3D maps. The third sub-objective is dealing with modelling and production of a physical model of a selected part of the Earth's surface and its further potential in connection with data visualization through the geographic information systems.
