Global virtual teams are an increasingly important phenomenon in the professional environment, and the pandemic COVID-19 has increased their importance. Global virtual teams - the geographically and culturally dispersed teams that use information and communication technologies to communicate - are becoming an essential part of the global knowledge economy. However, the global environment is a place of interaction between different national cultures. The set of cognitive, affective, and behavioural elements that enable this interaction is referred to as intercultural competencies. The intercultural competencies of team members are considered one of the success factors for the performance of global virtual teams.
The aim of this dissertation is to find out how important intercultural competencies are for organisations when managing global virtual teams. The thesis is divided into a theoretical part and a research part. In the theoretical part, the background and main concepts of how global virtual teams work are explained. The research part consists of a systematic review of the current state of knowledge and a research project. The review identifies thematic clusters on which current research on intercultural competencies in global virtual teams focuses. The overview also provides background for constructing a conceptual framework for the research project. The research project is designed as quantitative research using a questionnaire survey. During the survey process, data were collected from 120 professionals working in global virtual teams. The analysis of the collected data provided answers to the defined research questions. The research results show that organisations are aware of the importance of intercultural competencies in managing their global virtual teams, that the majority of respondents consider intercultural competencies as one of the selection criteria for members of global virtual teams, and that organisations use a range of tools to develop intercultural competencies in their global virtual teams.
The dissertation contributes to the understanding of the functioning of global virtual teams. This is beneficial from both a research and practice perspective due to the topicality of this type of work. The results of the research project can be used as a background for follow-up research and also in relation to the education and training of professionals working in the global environment.
