Course objectives:
|
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the main literary schools and currents of the 20th century and their representatives. The seminars are focused on detailed literary-theoretical analysis of key works of each literary current.

Requirements on student
|
Successful completion of this course is conditioned by the student's presence in class, systematic preparation for each class, active participation in the seminars, knowledge of the analysed texts and an in-class presentation.

Content
|
1. French existentialism. Sartre as theoretician, novelist and dramatist. Philosophy and ethics, the freedom of the individual. "l´oeil de caméra" as a technique in the novel.
2. Albert Camus - the absurd, the revolt, humanism.
3. Simone de Beauvoir. The role of women in society.
4. Boris Vian. Raymond Queneau. Poetics and language experimentation.
5. Julien Gracq.
6. Innovations in narrative prose, the "new" novel. Refusal of traditional conformism. Alain Robbe-Grillet, Nathalie Sarraute, Claude Simon, Michel Butor.
7. Marguerite Duras and specifics of her work.
8. Theatre of the absurd, Alfred Jarry. Artaud]s "theatre of cruelty".
9. French "new" theatre. Ionesco. Beckett. Adamov. Genet.
10. French poetry of the second half of the 20th century: Francis Ponge, René Char, Henri Michaux. Jacques Prévert and poetry of the mundane.
11. "New classics" Michel Tournier and Marguerite Yourcenar.
12. Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio.
13. Critical tendencies of the 20th century. University criticism, creator criticism, syncretism in criticism, psychoanalytical criticism, sociological criticism, thematic criticism, formalist criticism.
