This thesis discusses the teaching of Honen and Shinran, especially in a context of teaching about posthumous fate of women. The objective is to map changes in approach to posthumous fate of women in the teaching of schools Jodo and Jodo Shin, which were significant for Pure Land Buddhism during the Kamakura period (1185/1192-1333); and to describe possible differences in approaches towards women in these schools. The thesis deals with attitude towards women in the course of Japanese history and circumstances that supported this approach. Lives and teaching of both mentioned thinkers are also included.
