This BA thesis will focus on anthropomorphism of the animal characters in Richard Adams' novel "Watership Down" (1972). In his novel, Adams created a community of rabbits which behave, act, and think like humans in many respects but not exclusively. Drawing on both the scholarship on anthropomorphism in modern literature and the close reading of Adams' narrative, I will argue that anthropomorphist features of the rabbit characters are grounded in their psychology rather than in their physiology. Since the anthropomorphism involves the rabbits' mental processes, including decisions about the future, needs to protect each other, and planning strategies, the main goal of this work is to analyze and explain how far anthropomorphism goes in Adams' novel and how it shapes its narrative.
