Research Plan The main aim of the thesis is to investigate variations of English constructions containing existential particle there followed by the verb. The source texts for this paper are Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms and its translations in the Czech language. The present study examines four types of English existentials, namely bare existentials, existential-locative constructions, action/perception and modal constructions, and analyses them from the syntactic and semantic point of view. The Czech language does not possess any structural type comparative to existential sentences so that it must employ other strategies to achieve functional equivalence with the original sentences. The method applied in this analytical research is comparative. This work will be divided into a theoretical part and a practical part. In the first part the theoretical background dealing with word-order principles operating in both languages will be discussed. Individual there constructions will be introduced and supplemented with examples. In the practical part the corpus of examples for the analysis will be presented and analyzed. Later, the existential character of the Czech equivalents will be studied and evaluated.
