Introduction:
This research studies specifically the Czech Red Cross and the role of nurse volunteers in disaster preparedness of the Czech Red Cross for an emergency event in the Czech Republic. Our country is not subject to war conflicts and thus this thesis is reviewing the role of a nurse within the Czech Red Cross during 'peace times', that is, during emergency events and situations such as natural disasters.
Aim:
This thesis consists of a number of intermediate aims that should have lead to saturation of a single main aim. The first aim was to map out the existence of nurses in disaster preparedness of the Czech Red Cross on local level and to verify a research tool to be used on national level. As a result of the outcome of the first aim and of the circumstances (floods in 2013), the second aim was flexibly adapted and focused on the description of tools of disaster preparedness and the relationship between them. The third aim was to provide a description and analysis of a specific example of disaster preparedness of the Czech Red Cross in practice. Second quantitative phase of the research was to set out how nurses were represented in the disaster preparedness in the records of the Czech Red Cross during an emergency event and to reveal the process of registration of the voluntary nurses within the Czech Red Cross. The results of the individual aims led to the fulfillment of the main aim of the research description and analysis of the role of the nurse volunteers in disaster preparedness of the Czech Red Cross for an emergency event in the Czech Republic.
Methods:
Mixed methods research has been chosen for this study. Specifically, it is Type IV B several phased research design of mixed methods research sequential. The research is structured in two follow-up phases. The first qualitative phase uses several research methods for collection and analysis of data: semi-structured interview, focus group and case study. The second quantitative phase of the research uses questionnaire and secondary data as its method.
Results and discussion:
In the first phase of the research the existence of disaster preparedness on both theoretical and practical level was verified. It was possible to operationalize tools of disaster preparedness for this research. However, it was not possible to arrive at a model that would deal with activation and communication between individual tools of disaster preparedness. The case study showed a realistic example of nurses' involvement in disaster preparedness of the Czech Red Cross for an emergency event in the Czech Republic. The second phase of the research provided results that show the declining tendency in the number of registrations of nurses within the Czech Red Cross. Similar trend can also be seen in the number of newly trained nurse volunteers of the Czech Red Cross and also in the educational standard ZZA. This study is unable to determine the reasons for the decline but it is interesting to note one of the outcomes of the research that shows the representation of nursing help as oppose to other types of assistance. It was found that psychosocial assistance had nearly half as much representation in the studied disaster event than medical help.
Conclusion:
This research brought primary data about the studied matter. It describes and analyzes the role of nurse volunteers in disaster preparedness of the Czech Red Cross for an emergency event in the Czech Republic. The results however cannot be generalized and are viewed mainly as unique data that raise new topics for further research studies. The author considers her choice of mixed methods research as useful. Throughout the entire research the author kept in mind the limitations of this study, the ethical aspects and she tried to preserve the validity and reliability of the research.
