Graphene is a novel two-dimensional material consisting of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice.
The aim of the first part of my PhD thesis is to describe the mechanism of exfoliation process in various solvents with the tools of molecular modelling, investigate the role of (often neglected) electrostatic interactions and propose the way these interactions should be treated in molecular dynamics simulations involving graphene.
Second part of this thesis will focuse on obtaining accurate intermolecular interaction energies of graphene and its derivatives with molecular hydrogen and assessment of accuracy of current DFT functionals including empirical and nonempirical dispersion corrections.
Understanding adsorption properties of graphene may be important in various nanotechnological and sensing applications. In the third part of my thesis I will focus on describing intermolecular interactions of graphene with small organic molecules and possibility of accurate predictions of adsorption enthalpies by means of theoretical calculations.
