Introduction to sedimentology (scope, philosophy, history) - Basic concepts (sediment, facies, facies model, provenance, stratigraphy, cyclicity, carbonate/siliciclastic sediments) - Field and instrumental methods in sedimentology and stratigraphy (optical/CL/electron microscopy, EDX SEM, XRD, element/stable isotope geochemistry, outcrop/drill core data, seismic data, well-log data) - Origin and transport of solid sedimentary particles and dissolved species, basics of hydrodynamics, types of transport, modes of deposition - Sedimentary structures and mechanics of their origin - Sedimentary petrology (textures, classifications, grain properties, porosity, permeability, etc.) - Diagenesis - Facies models of siliciclastic and carbonate deposits - Introduction to stratigraphy and basic stratigraphic principles (superposition, cross-cutting, inclusion, horizontality, lateral continuity, age equivalence, biotic evolution and fossil record, uniformitarianism, etc.) - Lithostratigraphy (definition and units, lithostratigraphic correlation, outcrop/well data, remote sensing) - Biostratigraphy (definition and units, problems of application) - Event stratigraphy, Magnetostratigraphy, Chemostratigraphy, Cyclostratigraphy and astronomic cycles in depositional record - Sequence stratigraphy and geological record of sea-level changes - Chronostratigraphy, GSSPs, Geologic Time Scale
