| Course content |
|
The subject is a modernized and extended substitution of the former subject "Clinical chemistry". The individual seminars will be divided according to the clinical disciplines (e.g. lab. diagnostics in nephrology) or according to the topic (e.g. lab. diagnostics of inflammation). The students will gain the basic knowledge of modern laboratory investigation procedures including the utilization of current technological trends. Emphasis will be put on the elucidation of the role of clinical lab. in the complex diagnostic-therapeutical process. The teaching will take place in blocks and will be ensured by a team of clinical chemists in cooperation with clinicians (especially internists) and analysts. The students will evolve their abilities to reasonably indicate laboratory tests and correctly interpret their results by discussions and with the aid of model situations and case reports from clinical praxis.

The aim of the subject is to inform students about the laboratory methods and basic calculations employed in disease diagnostics and monitoring. Emphasis will be put on understanding of the significance of laboratory methods in the context of complex diagnostic procedure (involving history, physical examination, imaging techniques etc.) as well as their specific contribution in selected pathological states. The interactive form of tuition (incl. simulations, solving model situations, the use of case reports and discussion) will assist students in mastering the rational approach to laboratory test indication and the fundamentals of result interpretation.
After completing the subject, the students will manage a reasonable approach to the indications of basic laboratory tests and their interpretation in the context of other clinically relevant information. Besides the orientation in routinely investigated parameters, the students will gain knowledge of modern trends in the laboratory diagnostics, which will allow them to quickly adapt to the newly emerging methods. The graduates of the subject will also acquire the necessary groundwork for the ensuing tighter cooperation with colleagues in clinical laboratories. |
