Course content
The course is focused on these topics: Isidorus of Seville, Etymologies and transition from Antiquity to the Middle Ages; medieval reflections on language in Spain; the first tractates on Spanish; Renaissance reflection on language; work of Elio Antonio de Nebrija; work of Juan de Valdés; question about origins of Spanish language; question about the first language in Iberian Peninsula; the theory of corruption of Latin in the 16th and 17th century; thinking about the language in the 18th century; the Royal Spanish Academy; Spanish linguistics in the 19th century: a predecessor of comparative linguistics, Lorenzo Hervás y Panduro, descriptive grammar of Vicente Salvá, late effect of Port-Royal; work of Andrés Bello and the origins of linguistics in Latin America, Ramón Menéndez Pidal and the "Madrid School"; the linguistic geography, linguistic atlases and dialectology; structuralism in Spain; Spanish linguists in exile and foreign Hispanists; Current trends.

Learning outcomes
The course is focused on understanding the historical development of Spanish linguistics from its beginnings to the latest linguistic theories of the early 21st century. The main attention is devoted to reception of linguistic theories in the Hispanic world.
Students will acquire knowledge about the historical development of Spanish linguistics from its beginnings to the latest linguistic theories of the early 21st century.
