Course content
1) Sentence and statement, basic syntactic unit. 2) Combining words into compound pairs and larger units. 3) Conjunctions and other types of connectors, prepositions and their functions. 4) Syntactic errors, their detection and correction.

Learning outcomes
The basic syntactic unit will be defined and students will be introduced to the possibilities of its analysis. Special attention will be paid to the verb and its role in the sentence, the valency potential of verbs will be monitored and the most frequently used verbs will be practiced. The following topics will be discussed separately: 1) characteristics of basic and derived structures, transformations - passivization, nominalization; 2) syntactic relations, connecting sentence members, clauses, conjunctions and other types of connectors; 3) basic rules of punctuation in a simple sentence and in a complex sentence; 4) the most common types of syntactic errors.
Students are able to analyze a sentence, use connectives adequately. They determine the basic syntactic unit and master the principles of its analysis. They understand the role of the verb in a sentence, they know the valency potential of the most common verbs. Students have mastered the topics: - characteristics of basic and derived structures, transformations - passivization, nominalization; - syntactic relations, connecting sentence members, clauses, conjunctions and other types of connectors; - basic rules of punctuation in a simple sentence and in a complex sentence; - the most common types of syntactic errors.
Prerequisites
Students are able to use Czech language at the level B2 of reference frame, they can analyze a sentence into basic elements.
