Course content
The primary teaching method is a lecture accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation containing visual materials and a brief summary of the lecture in both English and Czech. Another method involves reading and interpreting selected key works of older Czech literature through short excerpts. In some cases, the texts of the excerpts are slightly adapted to improve comprehensibility. 1) Czech medieval literature (Kosmas´ Chronicle, Dalimil´s Chronicle, court poetry). 2) Important works of literature of the reign of Charles IV (Vita Caroli, Life of St Catherine, etc.) 3) Jan Hus and Hussitism. The invention of the book printing. 4) Literature of early humanism in the Czech lands (Hynek of Poděbrady, Bohuslav Hasištejnský, travelogue of Václav Šašek of Bířkov, etc.) 5) Literature of High Humanism (16th century - early 17th century). Travelogues (Kryštof Harant of Polžice) 6) Literatura of High Humanism (chronicles - Václav Hájek of Libočany; book printers - Daniel Adam of Veleslavín) 7) Jan Amos Komenský (Comenius), his life and work. 8) Unity of the Brethren and its contribution to Czech culture (Jan Blahoslav, translation of the Bible of Kralice) 9) Baroque literature. Spiritual poetry (Fridrich Bridel, Adam Michna of Otradovice) 10) Baroque literature: sermons (Antonín Koniáš), historiography (Bohuslav Balbín)

Learning outcomes
The student will gain an overview of the culture and literature of the Czech lands during the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque period. The course also includes readings of excerpts from the most important works of Czech medieval and early modern literature.
