Course content
|
Relation of microbiology to dentistry. Characteristics of prokaryotes. Internal bacterial structures. Superficial bacterial structures. Spores. Metabolism of bacteria. Bacterial enzymes, pathogenicity factors. Reproduction and genetics of bacteria. Pathogenicity and virulence. Exotoxins and endotoxins. Disinfection, sterilization, asepsis and antisepsis in the dental office. Mechanisms of effects of antibiotics. Side adverse effects. Bacterial resistance. Antimicrobial agents - classification. Groups of antibiotics and their indication in dental practice. Basic principles of antibiotic prophylaxis in dentistry. Antibiotic policy. Bacterial antigens. Natural resistance of the oral cavity. Structure, classification and replication of viruses. Antiviral agents. General mycology. Antifungal agents. Ecology of microbes in the oral cavity. Natural oral microflora and its dependence on anatomical and physiological conditions. Less favourable and pathogenic influences of the oral microflora on the human organism. Endogenous infections. Nosocomial infections in the dental practice. Overview of oral cavity infections.

Learning outcomes
|
To practice basic skills and measures in working with infectious materials. To acquire knowledge of taxonomy, morphology, genetics and physiological properties of microroganisms. To gain an overview of diagnostic methods and microbiology laboratory services. To be capable of selecting the most suitable examinations, especially in mouth infections. To become familiar with antimicrobial agents, their prophylactic and therapeutic use, and with the principles of disinfection and sterilization in dentistry.
The students will be able to implement the acquired knowledge and skills both in the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to patients and in scientific and research activities.

Successful completion of biology, anatomy and medical chemistry.
