Course content
The course consists of two consecutive lectures. (2x2 hours). The first lecture will provide a brief theoretical overview of burn injury and its severity factors, which determine further emergency treatment management. The practical training conducted under the supervision of a lecturer will be focused on practical estimation of burns extent, overall severity of thermal trauma and identification of imminent, incipient and ongoing burn shock with indication of overall anti-shock treatment. Students will practice the basic calculation for the initial amount of infusions needed in extensive burns. The second lecture will contain theoretical explanation of the burns depth and its surgical and non-surgical treatment. Practical training conducted under the supervision of a lecturer will be focused on practical recognition of the burns depth and training of local treatment procedures for extensive burns. Practical training will be carried out using a simulator and PC presentation of individual cases.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Lecture, Demonstration, Training in job and motor Skils
  • Attendace - 4 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
Theoretical instruction and practical training to determine the severity of a burn injury and to assess the depth of burn, the management of burn wound treatment and practical training in aseptic and sterile techniques required for burn treatment procedures.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to correctly recognize the initial severity of a thermal injury and to determine the emergency treatment management (transfer to burn centre, burn shock) and know the procedures for the primary treatment of burned areas.
Prerequisites
Good knowledges of fundamental surgery.
CH1/VC013

Assessment methods and criteria
Systematic Observation of Student

In order to earn the credit, the student is required to actively participate in class activities and demonstrate practical skills needed to determine the extent, depth and overall severity of the burn injury.
