Learning outcomes
Czech Media Law is characterized by the fact that the legal regulations for individual types of media (media services) are contained in different laws (there is not one media law) and therefore the regulation of different types of media is set differently and for different types of media different rules apply, although in essence, it is still the same activity - providing information or entertainment to users. The course will primarily get the students acquinted with the legal regimes of each media type; it will be explained how "media laws" define individual types of media (in particular periodicals, radio and television broadcasts, on-line broadcasting, on-demand audiovisual media services), and on examples of regulatory rules (the regulation of the content of programs, regulation of commercial messages, etc.) the relevance of differentiating the different types of media services will be clarified. In this context, it will also be explained in what mode the authorization to operate individual types of media (or what needs to be done in order to commence the operation) and which authorities are competent to perform the administrative supervision of compliance with the rules for individual types of media.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to understand the essential features of the legal definitions of media services, will be able to distinguish media services from a legal point of view, will be well informed about the laws which in their entirety form "media law" and will understand in which situations a particular law has to be applied.
