Course content
1. Sociological Concept of Health and Disease in Historical Perspective; 2. Health and Disease in Sociological Theories - Structural Functionalism, Interpretative Concept and Constructivism; 3. Social actors' actions in relation to health and disease - development in sociological theories; 4. Sociology of the family in relation to health and illness; 5. Social determinants of health (development in modern society and present in postmodern risk society); 6. Medicalization and mediation of contemporary society; 7. Lifestyle and lifestyle - forced and chosen behaviour of social actors; 8. Normative assessment of health and illness from the perspective of sociology in contemporary society; 9. Subjective assessment of health and illness in contemporary society and interpretative possibilities of measuring the quality of life; 10. The role and status of paramedics and physicians of paramedical practitioners and physicians and their current transformation; 11. Sociological attributes of the health care and health care system; 12. Public health as a social system; 13. Sociological research on health, disease and health (historical development and current trends), health literacy.

Learning outcomes
The subject deals with sociological aspects of health, disease and the healthcare system, shows their concept in sociological theories and the difference from biomedical and psychological concepts; the subject analyzes cultural influences on imposed and selected behavior in relation to health and illness in the historical context and in the present, including the meaning and function of the family. It introduces the normative approaches to health and disease of various social groups, shows how it is possible to obtain interpretive data. It deals with the social determinants of health in modern society and their transformation in postmodern (risky) society, including the positive and negative effects of medicalization and medicinalization, emphasizing the difference between lifestyle, lifestyle, life path and quality of life. It analyzes the social role of healthcare workers and shows the basic attributes of their professional specificity, including the transformation of healthcare professions over time. It shows trends in the sociology of health, disease and healthcare according to types of research in the Czech Republic and abroad.
After completing the subject, the student will be able to perceive health and illness as a social phenomenon, distinguishing it from biomedical and psychological phenomena. Based on sociological paradigms, he will be able to distinguish a normative and interpretative approach to health. Understand the differences of health and illness in cultural contexts, including the phenomena of medicalization and medication. Understand the development of fundamental social determinants of health and disease. Recognize the importance of social factors in the family and lifestyle in relation to health. He will be able to distinguish concepts of life style, lifestyle, lifestyle, quality of life. It recognizes the social role and status of healthcare workers. It will be able to distinguish the social impacts on health care and public health systems from biological influences. He will be oriented in sociology of health institutions. She will know trends in sociological research in health and illness, including health literacy research. He will be able to distinguish the sociology of health and illness from other related disciplines.

Presentation of a group of students (3 students each) on the topic of the selected social phenomenon in relation to health and illness in particular population groups (at national or international level).
