Students in this course will be introduced to the basic economic problems/decision-making tasks that await them after graduation from medical school. They will decide between employment in a government medical facility, a non-government for-profit/not-for-profit medical facility, private practice as an individual or as a corporation. The graduate of the course is adequately equipped with the skills and knowledge to make these decisions competently and rationally. The course therefore covers the basics of investment decision-making (e.g. purchasing equipment for a practice), financing (e.g. a loan when setting up a practice), legislation (choosing the appropriate legal form), employment legislation including remuneration, as well as reimbursement mechanisms and a list of medical procedures.

After completing the course, the student will have rational expectations regarding the economic aspects of his/her future working career as an employee, self-employed or as a legal entity. He/she will understand the advantages and disadvantages of the different forms and will be able to competently consider the option optimal for his/her situation. This economic rationality and literacy will also have an impact on personal financial decision-making. At the same time, the student will understand the economic implications of decision making during his/her professional career (e.g. cost of a particular procedure vs. reimbursement from health insurance, etc.).
Ability to rationally evaluate the economic implications of different options or combinations of careers in health care, realistic expectations about the economics of private practice - economic demands, start-up budget, financing, investment skills, economics of employing people.
