Course content
Defining the field of experimental psychology: definitions, basic assumptions. Historical overview: the roots of Experimental Psychology, founders, sources of inspiration. Reaction time - the basic variable, types of experiments: laboratory and field experiments. Variables: types of variables according to schema S-O-R, dependent variable and independent variable. Sources of bias: in the subjects in the experimental situation, in external circumstances. Control in experimental research, control groups. Basic designs of experimental research. Practical examples: presentation of current research in experimental psychology

Learning outcomes
Experimental method 1 The aim of this course is to acquaint students with basics of experimental research method. They familiarize with differences from other research methods, the historical development of experiment in psychology and up-to-date examples of experimental research studies. The main part of the course are practical exercises in small groups where students choose their theme and plan their own experiment which is practical and rated output in the folow-up final examination of the course EXP2.
Knowledge (Student ...): - is familiar with the historical development of experimental method in psychology - understands the principals of the experiment and quasie-xperiment methods as tools for the identification of causal relationships between variables. - knows the typical sources of bias in participants, experimental situation and external conditions. Skills (Student ...): - is able to write a proposal of a simple experimental research project on free theme in the field of psychology. - operationalizes independent and dependent variables in a particular experiment. - is able to design effective ways to control of undesirable variables and disturbances in a particular experimental situation
Prerequisites
Course EM1K is a compulsory subject (A category). Prerequisites: completion of the courses ZM1K, ZM2K and KMK. EM1K is also a compulsory condition for continuing in EM2K.

Assessment methods and criteria
Seminar Work

Students are asked to design their own experiment following these conditions (at least two A4 pages): - It must be an experiment or kvaziexperiment (see methodological literature) - It must be from the psychology field - It must be their iriginal work (inspiration and repetition of famous experiments is possible). Students have the opportunity to work in pair (or threesome). This is an experimental exercise and therefore it is not necessary to have such a large sample of participants and use statistics. Participation in exercises and designig of experient is compulsory.
