Prof. Shlomo Hareli School of Business Administration, University of Haifa Emotions provide important information to others. Among other things, about the state of the expresser of the emotion, as well as about the situation. In my talk, I will review evidence for the kind of information that the emotions of others provide to their observers. In this context, I will present evidence showing that observers are able to learn the wrongs and rights relevant to a specific situation based on the emotions expressed by others. I will exemplify how emotions exchanged between people during social interaction, determine the power of expressers, and how emotions inform impressions formed about others during job interviews. Hand in hand with that, I will discuss one possible mechanism that enables observers to make sense of others' emotions and the role of context in this process. Finally, I will wrap up the presentation by discussing how the social perception of emotions shapes our social and organizational lives and what are in my view important questions that should be studied in future research. Prof. Ursula Hess Institute of Psychology, Humboldt University, Berlin In this presentation, I am discussing the notion that anger can be considered a positive emotion for those who feel it and for society at large. Anger has the ability to motivate people to act against injustice and norm violations in general and it provides the actor with (physical) strength, but also with an optimistic tendency to take risks. However, as a caveat it should be noted that even though anger does this for both men and women, women who show anger are liked less.
