Course content
|
A´systematic survey of movements, genres and writers. Next to a short repetition of stuff of the bachelor's study, the classes will focus on several "bright spots" of the older literature. Attention is paid to the following: - Legends of the Holy Lady: Beatrijs - Discussion about tolerance during the Uprising against Spain: Dirk Volckertsz. Coornhert, Synodus van der Consciëntiën Vryheydt - Amsterdam Theatre: Joost van den Vondel, Gysbregt van Aemstel - Sailos' adventures in the form of fictive worlds as society critics: Hendrik Smeeks, Krinke Kesmes - Dutch Romance: Rhijnvis Feith, Julia - Student society critics of the first half of the 19th. century: Nicolaas Beets (Hildebrand), Camera obscura - Romances of the second half of the 19th century: Jacob van Lennep, Klaasje Zevenster - Flemish poetry: Guido Gezelle, Kerkhofblommen

The subject gives a systematic survey of older Dutch and Flemish literature from ca. 1170 to 1880.
