Course content
During the course, we look at each period at the hand of various important texts. Course schedule: 1) Beginnings - Hendrik van Veldeke and Dutch minnesang; 2) Arthurian Novels - Walewein; 3) Dutch Medieval Theater I - a series of serious games from the Abele Spelen; 4) Marian Theatre - Mariken van Nieumeghen; 5) Secular Legends - Reis van Sinte Brandaen; 6) Dutch Theatre II - Elkerlijc; 7) Dutch Humanists - Dirck Volkertsz. Coornhert, Zedekunst dat is wellevenskunste; 8) Feminism in the Renaissance - Anna Bijns, Een schoon en suver boeckxen; 9) Dutch Theatre III - Gerbrand Bredero, De Spaansche Brabander; 10) Dutch Theatre IV - Joost van den Vondel, Palamedes; 11) Historiography - Pieter C. Hooft, Nederlandsche Histooriën; 12) Emblematics and Didactic Poetry - Jacob Cats, Houwelick; 13) Recapitulation.

Learning outcomes
The course deepens the knowledge of older literature that was provided to students during their bachelor study. Students are introduced to the most important authors of medieval and renaissance literature in the original version and in modern Dutch adaptation.
A thorough survey of older Dutch and Flemish literature until 1650. Ability to work with older literary texts.
Prerequisites
Presence in the lessons (maximum 2 absences during the semester). Knowledge of Dutch at level C1 CEFR

Assessment methods and criteria
Essay

Presence during the lessons (maximum 2 absences per semester). Homework and Presentations. During the semester 5 books in Dutch should be read.
