Course content
|
This course provides the students with basic theoretical principles of comparative linguistics and with an overview of the state of research from the point of view of confrontational linguistics. The students focus in the seminars on comparing the language systems of Dutch with another language. This happens on various levels (phonetic, morphologic, syntactic, lexical). The students get to find out on their own what the congruences and differences are in the ways of expressing oneself in the Dutch and in the Czech, especially with regard to comparing the translations of Dutch and Czech literary texts. In order to do this, the students make among others use of the parallel Intercorp corpus (http://www.korpus.cz/intercorp/).

Learning outcomes

This course is designed to provide the students with basic theoretical principles of comparative linguistics and with an overview of the state of research with regard to the Dutch language from the confrontational point of view. The students get a chance to try comparing the Czech and the Dutch language system on the basis of comparisons of the Dutch and Czech literary texts. For these purposes they will be introduced among others to the possibilities created by the existence of the parallel corpus Intercorp (http://www.korpus.cz/intercorp/).
The aim of this course is to make students familiar with basic theoretical principles of comparative linguistics and with an overview of the state of research concerning the Dutch language from the comparative point of view. The students get a chance to try working with parallel Intercorp corpus in order to apply confrontational analysis of a chosen language feature for example in the Dutch-Czech relation.

Prerequisites
|
Apart from the Dutch language competence on the minimal level B2 - CEFR also an insight in the linguistic terminology is required.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam, Student performance, Seminar Work
Being active during the seminars, carrying out assignments systematically, handing in a seminar paper (analysis of a chosen language feature from the confrontational point of view).
