Course content
The main topics covered in the subject will be: 1. Protolytic and redox reactions. Equilibria. Bioenergetics. 2. Building units of biomolecules. Structure and properties. 3. Proteins, structure, function, post-translational modification. Supramolecular structures of proteins. Structure and function of hemoglobin and immunoglobulins. 4. Enzymes, properties and structure. Classification. Cofactors. Mechanism of enzyme catalysis. Regulation of enzyme activity. 5. Citric acid cycle. Respiratory chain. Oxidative phosphorylation. 6. Signaling molecules. Hormone receptors. General mechanisms of hormone action. 7. Overview of carbohydrate metabolism. Glycolysis. Gluconeogenesis. Pentosephosphate cycle. 8. Glycogen metabolism. Metabolism of other carbohydrates. 9. Lipid digestion. Lipid absorption. Metabolism of saturated fatty acids. Metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids. Metabolism of ketone bodies. 10. Metabolism of triacylglycerols, glycerophospholipids and sphingolipids. Metabolism of eicosanoids. 11. Metabolism of cholesterol, bile acids and steroid hormones. Synthesis of calciols. 12. Protein digestion. Absorption of amino acids and proteins. Intracellular degradation of proteins. General amino acid degradation reactions. 13. Ammonia metabolism and toxicity. Synthesis of non-essential amino acids. Urea cycle. Biogenic amines. 14. Synthesis of low molecular weight substances from amino acids: heme, catecholamines, carnitine, creatine. Nucleotides - structure, function, metabolism.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is to explain the principles of biochemical processes in the organism and the mechanisms of regulation of basic metabolic events. This knowledge is a prerequisite for the interpretation of physiological and pathological processes in the human organism. Students are also guided to practical mastery of simple biochemical analyses and to the interpretation of laboratory test results.
The student who passes the subject will be equipped with theoretical knowledge on basic biochemical pathways and information on regulation of intermediary metabolism. Student will be able to interpret physiological and pathological events in human organism. In practice, student will be able to work according to good laboratory practice rules and to perform basic biochemical tests and to interpret laboratory results.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam, Didactic Test

100% participation in practical exercises three interim written tests, where student must reach at least 70% of points successfully performed practical test
