Course content
1. Introduction in the study of social and cultural anthropology (SCA), subject of its interest, fundamental issues and classification of SCA. Position of SCA in the system of sciences. 2. Term culture in SCA. Development of the term culture. Axiological, reductionist and anthropological concepts of culture. Anthropological concepts of culture: Kottak, Kroeber-Kluckhohn. 3. Methodology of SCA. Real culture, ideal culture, cultural construct. 4. Birth and genesis of SCA, pre-anthropological thinking. 5. Development of SCA as a science: evolutionism and diffusionism, systemic approaches - configurationism, significance of personality and culture, classic functionalism. Main personalities and topics. 6. Development of SCA as a science: structural anthropology, neo-evolutionist anthropology, cultural ecology, cultural materialism, schools of new anthropology - symbolic and cognitive anthropology. Main personalities and topics. 7. Selected issues of SCA: cultural ethnocentrism v. cultural relativism 8. Selected issues of SCA: cultural change (endogenous and exogenous) 9. Selected issues of SCA: systems of kinship (by blood, by marriage, terminology of kinship) 10. Selected issues of SCA: marriage from the viewpoint of SCA and its functions 11. Selected issues of SCA: communication and language 12. Ethnomusicological lecture 13. Discussion with a guest (or detailed lecture on an above-mentioned topic)

Learning outcomes
The aim of exposition of Fundamentals of Social and Cultural Anthropology is introducing anthropology as one of the basic and holistic sciences "on others" and variety of human situation. The course introduces its objectives, classification, methodology, terminology, evolution anthropology as a science (anthropological theories) and the main topical themes (social and cultural change, systems of kinship, communication, religious life etc.) in the context of anthropological thinking. Moreover, the course aims at bringing forth overlaps that can be derived from great variety of cultural multiplicity, including the thought on our vision of culture limitedness.
Student has a basic orientation in social and cultural anthropology as a science. He/she is able to identify its roots, evolution and key concepts, practical examples included. He/she has understanding of anthropological approach to culture conception and is able to use its core terminology (cultural ethnocentrism vs. cultural relativism, biological vs. cultural determinism etc.). Moreover, he/she is capable to draw the knowledge to his or her main study field also.
Prerequisites
According to the fact, it is a basic and introductory course, there are no prior requirements.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Active participation in class, fulfilling prescribed tasks, especially home study of chosen literature, completion of final test (70% = passing).
