The aim of this course is to introduce the students with general premises of the area often called as gender linguistics. And this by objectification of a presence of gender (feminity, masculinity and sexualized aspects) within not only Czech but also other languages. We will discuss how are cultural images of men and women constructed by language and in the language. Moreover our aim would be the appearance of sexualized meanings in the language and different patterns of use of language by men, women and so called sexual minorities. Students should acquire not only knowledge about this area, but mainly gender senzitivity to be able to analyze written and spoken language from the aspect of gender. They should be aware of power relations that are re-producing gender inequalities. The course is based on lectures, text reading and discussion, and on practicing own analyses.
Students will precise their work with both scholarly and popular texts; develop skills in critical analysis of social phenomena (through the analysis of language); will get familiar with the methods of ideological, or membership categorization analysis; and will acquire gender sensitivity.
Prerequisites
