Course content
1. Morphology as a linguistic discipline. Basic morphological units. The concept of morpheme, types of morphemes. 2. Morphematic structure of word. Structure of word from the point of view of word-formation. 3. Basic word-formative processes. Derivation. 4. Basic word-formative processes. Compounding. Abbreviation. 5. Analysis of word-formation of a word. 6. The subject of Morphology. Basic units of word-formative system. 7. Types of morphologic forms. Means of expressing grammatical meaning. 8. Parts of speech and their classification principles. 9. Nouns and nominative grammatical categories. 10. Adjectives. Semantics. Grammatical categories. 11. Pronouns. Semantic classification of pronouns. Declension of pronouns in Ukrainian. 12. Numeral. Types of numerals. Declension of numerals in Ukrainian. 13. Credit test.

Learning outcomes
The first part of this course provides the students with a basis for further studies of Ukrainian language. The aim of this course is to present the students with the subject of Morphology, its specific features and content of the basic terminology, such as grammatical category, grammatical form, grammatical meaning of a word, paradigm and morpheme. Special attention is paid to the principle of classification of parts of speech and the specific categorical meaning of each part of speech (we shall mention both the traditional and heterogeneous classification). Students will also be presented with an outline of morphological and syntactic grammatical categories. The main focus is on the structure of the word, word-formation in current Ukrainian and means of word-formation typical of all autosemantic parts of speech.
Students will understand the Ukrainian system of grammar. Special attention is paid to word-formative processes and morphemic analysis of nominative parts of speech.
Prerequisites
Completing the courses preceding this course, i.e. having the knowledge of flexion of nouns and adjectives, flexion of verb and the corresponding level of language competence. A practical knowledge of Ukrainian, at least A2 level of the European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Written exam

Passing the credit test: there are only 3 attempts (1 regular + 2 retakes), the credit can only be obtained within the same term, otherwise the student will have to enrol for it again and complete the course with all its requirements
