Course content
The course is divided in five sections: 1. General Bioethics: history (significant predecessors, the birth of the scientific branch, the most important representatives, world centres of bioethics, the most relevant journals), the philosophical conceptions of man (anthropological models), diverse ethical attitudes, principles of personalist bioethics. 2. Beginning of human life: physiology of fertilization and embryogenesis, who or what is a human embryo?, methods of birth control, induced abortion, assisted reproductive technologies. 3. You shall not kill: mutilation, suicid, murder, capital punishment, legitimate self-defence. 4. Challenges for modern medicine: transplantology, stem cells and regenerative medicine, genetic biotechnology. 5. End of human life: reconciling to death, kinds of therapeutic means, futile therapy, persistent vegetative state, hospice movement, palliative care, determination of death, euthanasia, question of "good dying".

Learning outcomes
The goal of this course is to familiarize students with the most important questions of the actual bioethics in the light of the magisterium of the Church.
Students will be able to evaluate actual bioethical questions in a systematic way and to take a critical stand to them at the end of the course.
Prerequisites
For a successful finish of this subject it is necessary to be familiarized with the reproductive male and female system at the level of biology in secondary schools. A basic orientation in the main philosophical and ethical streams of western culture is required as well.

Oral exam

For a successful finish of this subject it's essential to master the learning materials that will be available in the form of power point slides and to study the literature, which a teacher will indicate during lessons.
