Course content
The following issues are covered: - brief history of Czech translation (incl. translations of Russian fiction) - Jiří Levý and his role in contempoarry theory of translation - selected issues of translation from a cognate language (e.g. Russian) - stages of translating process - so-called adeguateness, semantic and stylistic equivalence in translation - time-specific norms of translation (the context of time and culture in translation) - issue of translatability, so-called "substitution" in translation - role of translation (of literature) in development of the culture of the target language - key terms of theory of translation

Learning outcomes
The objective of the discipline is to provide students with substantial knowledge of the theory of translation and make them aware of the creative translation skills, elementary procedures of translation. The following issues are covered: - brief history of Czech translation (incl. translations of Russian fiction) - Jiří Levý and his role in contempoarry theory of translation - selected issues of translation from a cognate language (e.g. Russian) - stages of translating process - so-called adeguateness, semantic and stylistic equivalence in translation - time-specific norms of translation (the context of time and culture in translation) - issue of translatability, so-called "substitution" in translation - role of translation (of literature) in development of the culture of the target language - key terms of theory of translation
Students will acquire knowledge of the theoretical aspects of translation and will become familiar with the translation methods and creative approaches in translation process.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of Russian language corresponding at least to C1 level. In case of foreign students, corresponding knowledge of Czech language. Knowledge of general linguistics as well as partial linguistic disciplines corresponding to the level of Mgr. study od Russian philology at Czech university. General knowledge of the issues in humanities and social sciences.

Oral exam

- active participation in lectures, seminars - study of reference literature - submitting a presentation/ project/ paper - passing the exam
