Course content
Explaining a problem; Explanation, description and prediction; Types of explanation; Models of explanation; Pragmatic aspects of explanation. Methodology of research: general methods of research. The role of an author of a scholarly text, the role of a reader. How to proceed from the topic to asking questions, from the questions to problems? How to proceed from the problems to statements, from statements to reasons? Writing: Some specific skills related to writing a scholarly text. How shall we draft the text? What is the content of Introduction and Conclusions? What is the role of connectors, paragraphs? What shall we pay attention to while revising the text? What is an abstract like?

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic Lecture(Interpretation, Training), Dialogic Lecture (Discussion, Dialog, Brainstorming), Work with Text (with Book, Textbook)
Learning outcomes
The objective of the seminar is to inform Ph.D. students of various specialisations about the essentials of theory of science and about major principles of methodology which must be respected when writing a scholarly work (including a Ph.D. thesis).
Ability to treat scholarly literature and a scholarly text. Composing written scholarly texts.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of general linguistics as well as partial linguistic disciplines corresponding to the level of Mgr. study od Russian philology at Czech university. General knowledge of the issues in humanities and social sciences.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam

- active participation in lectures, seminars - study of reference literature - submitting a presentation/ project/ paper - passing the exam
