Learning outcomes
|
In the first part of the course, students will gain a comprehensive overview of Russian drama, the development of the Russian novel and prose in the first half of the 19th century. Emphasis is also placed on the key figures of Russian poetry of this period. Attention is paid to the changes in poetics from the early 19th century to the emergence of realism as a major movement in Russian literature. The second part of the course focuses on the major figures, schools of thought and artistic movements in Russian literature of the second half of the 19th century, the development of the Russian short story, novel, poetry and drama, as well as the principles of aesthetics of this period. Also included is an analysis of the conflict between the concept of pure art and the emphasis on the service function of literature. The course also traces the reception of Russian critical realist literature abroad. Analysis of literary works assumes knowledge of primary art texts.
Students will get an insight into the Russian drama, poetry and prose of the 2nd half of the 19th century and will acquire basic methodology of literary analysis.

Prerequisites
|
A practical knowledge of Russian, at least A2 level of the European Framework of Reference for Languages. Knowledge of the basic terminology of literary theory from the course Introduction to Literary Theory and the knowledge of theoretical basis as presented at the course Russian Literature of the 19th Century 1.
