Course content
**The aim of the course** is to introduce students to selected ecological topics and to discuss them in the Polish language. **Some proposed topics and thematic areas:** 1. **The Anthropocene and other "-cenes"** - In which epoch are we actually living? An explanation of other approaches and perspectives (Anglocene, Urbanocene, Technocene, Necrocene, Symbiocene). 2. **The New Eco-dictionary** - How do we speak about the climate? From the Anthropocene to the Symbiocene. New Humanities/Posthumanities. 3. **Critique of consumer society** - Overproduction, overconsumption - consequences of excessive consumption (waste, diseases, pollutants in nature, indebtedness, child labor). 4. **From consumer society to slow food, slow fashion, slow city.** What can we ourselves do to improve the climate (localism, transport, seasonal food, waste sorting, etc.). 5. **Tourism vs. agritourism.** The impact of mass tourism on the climate - overtourism. Two perspectives: tourist vs. local residents of tourist destinations, impact on the planet. 6. **What language do we use to communicate?** An ecolinguistic perspective (lingua nativa, lingua receptiva, lingua franca, lingua fracta, language imperialism, protection of minority languages, legislation). What language do people speak in the Polish-Czech border region? Commentary on results of cross-border communication research. 7. **Biodiversity 1: FOREST** - Explanation of how the system works and causal relationships among its components. The importance of forests/trees and their place in the ecosystem. How do we protect our forests (legislation, national parks, protected areas, etc.), overexploitation vs. reforestation. 8. **Simona Kossak: The Saga of the Białowieża Forest** - The extraordinary story of an ordinary woman-legend. The story of the Białowieża Forest and the woman who fought to preserve it. Commentary on S. Kossak's book about the forest and the 2024 film about her. 9. **Biodiversity 2: ANIMALS AND PLANTS** - Protection of endangered plants/animals. Ethics of domestic and industrial farming. Film: *What is the Price of Meat?* Vegetarianism/veganism. Animal protection laws/organizations. 10. **Biodiversity 3: WATER** - A vital element of the ecosystem. Why is clean water/rivers/oceans important? The effects of global warming on biodiversity in aquatic systems and the impact on our lives. Film: *RAWA - The Strangest River in the World*. 11. **Eco-icon Greta Thunberg** - Media portrayal of Greta in the Polish and Czech press. Critical analysis of G.T.'s speeches at climate congresses (text structure, persuasive elements, meme analysis, microexpression analysis). 12. **BIO MOSAIC** - An interactive workshop on biodiversity. A certified workshop about the interconnections within ecosystem functioning.
