Course content
1. Introduction, history of demography, demography as a field of study, demographic characteristics, time in demography, Lexis diagram 2. Demography as a science, structure, relationship to other disciplines 3. Sources demographic information 4. The concept of population 5. The structure of the population by sex, age and location 6. The structure of the population by nationality and education 7. Fertility and birthrate 8. Marriage and divorce 9. Death rate 10. Demographic theory 11. Projections and prognosis 12. The tendency of population development

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to apprise students with the demography as the discipline on the border between social and natural sciences. Lectures will be focused primarily on interpreting the results of demographic statistics and data. An essential part of the student's skill is the ability of quick orientation in the demographic data and understand the logic and method of their acquisition and construction.
After successful completion of the course the student will be able to: demonstrate knowledge of basic demographics; interpret the results of demographic statistics; orient oneself in the demographic data; explain ways of obtaining demographic data; discuss the issue of demographic data, analyze demographic data in relation to specific social phenomena; indicate demographic data in context with the findings of other social sciences, especially sociology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

The ability to read and understand scientific text. The ability to interpret research results.
