Course content
1. History - the onset of nationalism, the First World War, the effects of oil discovery 2: The roots of instability - the founding of Israel, the Cold War, religious extremism 3. Society - religion, tribal organization, the privacy of Muslims 4. Middle East and the West - mutual perception, media, field work in the region

Learning outcomes
The course provides a basic overview of modern history, political development and society of the Middle East. Students will be able to draw on the main features of the social and political structures of the region, with emphasis on those with which the Middle East differs from the usual organization in Europe. Subject participants should receive information about the major events since the end of the 19th century (key conflicts, the founding of Israel, etc.) and their influence on social transformations, but also about the religions of the region and their influence y into the private life of individuals, society and politics, the important features of social structures (the importance of the family and the surviving tribal arrangement). The course also addresses the question of how the people of the Middle East perceive "the West" - how these attitudes are based and what their manifestations are. In addition to the relevant literature, the course also builds on many years of personal experience and teacher residency in the Middle East.
Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to orientate in the major events of the Middle East of the 20th and 21st centuries. From an anthropological point of view, he should have an idea of the practical functioning of the Middle East society, of the influence and roles of religious and tribal institutions and structures. He should be able to apply his theoretical knowledge from the study of cultural anthropology to any other research in the field of Middle Eastern issues.
