- Introductory information to the course; - Religions of the East in a religious studies perspective: the concept of "the West", the normative and lived dimensions of religious traditions, orthodoxy and orthopraxy, religion in everyday life practice; - Ancient religions of the Ancient Near East; - Ancient religions; - Judaism I: the formation of Jewish religion up to the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple; - Judaism II: the Diaspora, the development of Judaism from the destruction of the Temple to the present, the Bible; - Christianity I: Christianity in antiquity - Christianity in the Roman Empire and the early Middle Ages; - Christianity II: Christianity in the Middle Ages - main figures and ideological currents; - Christianity III: modern and contemporary Christianity; - Islam I: Prophet Muhammad, the Koran, the foundations of the Islamic faith; - Islam II: Islam in the contemporary world; - New religious movements in Europe and the USA

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the religious studies approach to the major religious traditions of the world and to the latest findings of religious studies on religious traditions that have significantly influenced the cultural history of the Euro-American region. Students will gain an overview of the history and present of the religious traditions that have shaped the cultural and historical milieu of Europe, especially ancient religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Attention is also given to new religious movements and alternative religious movements in contemporary Europe and the United States. Students will also become familiar with translations of source texts on selected religious traditions. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the history of given religious traditions; describe the developmental tendencies and characteristics of given religious traditions; define the basic principles of the religious studies approach to the description and analysis of given religious traditions; evaluate the significance of given religious traditions within the cultural history of Europe.
