Course content
1. Defining the Middle Ages, the transformation of the concept in historiography, its importance for understanding of contemporary Europe. 2. The impact of ancient traditions and Christianity for the formation of medieval culture. 3. The Arab world and Europe: conflict and cultural exchange. 4. Turkic peoples in confrontation with Europe, the Mongol expansion. 5. The importance of German colonization in shaping central Europe. 6. Poland and Lithuania between paganism, Catholicism and Orthodoxy. 7. Hungarian state in the middle Ages. 8. Eastern Roman Empire - Byzantium. 9. Balkans between East and West, the importance of historical processes on existing ethnic map. 10. KievanRus and the formation of the Russian state in relation to Byzantium.

Learning outcomes
The course provides an introduction to selected phenomena and processes that can be seen as the key to understanding the roots of European civilization in the period traditionally referred to as the middle Ages. Emphasis is placed on understanding the particular delimitation of borders to other cultural-historical basis. For this reason, the theme of the lectures relations between Christians and Muslims, but also the fatal division of the Eastern and Western Christianity. Cultural and religious processes are associated with the ethnogenesis of the nations of Central and Eastern Europe.
After successful completion of the course the student will be able to describe the basic features of the cultural development of Medieval Europe in relation to the definition of otherness; describe forms of intercultural exchange and conflict in the shaping of Europe for examples of specific areas of Central and Eastern Europe; explain the share of culture and religion in the ethnogenesis of the nations; discuss the importance of knowledge of medieval history for understanding contemporary cultural ties and conflicts.
