Course content
1. Adaptation to the natural environment. 2. Hunters and gatherers, gardening culture, developed agriculture and pastoralists. 3. The current urban anthropology, field research in urban environments. 4. Political anthropology - the intercultural concept of power and authority. 5. Acephalous society, tribes, chiefdoms, state. 6. Anthropology of law (L. Pospisil). 7. Economic anthropology - the dispute between formalists and substantivists, criticism of homo economicus. 8. Reciprocity and redistribution, phenomenon kula (K. Polanyi, M. Sahlins, M. Mauss, B. Malinowski) 9. The issue of value in exchange, potlatch; example of the integration of cultural subsystems in traditional societies - the relationship between religion and the economy. 10. Anthropological studies of social inequalities - the culture of poverty (O. Lewis).

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on the basic concepts of cultural anthropology in past and present. The emphasis is on introduction to the basic themes of these anthropological sub-disciplines: cultural ecology, political anthropology, anthropology of law and economic anthropology. Attention is paid to explanation of the different possibilities of conceptualizing the theme, not only in the different anthropological traditions, but also in comparison with other social sciences. The aim is also to present the diversity of cultural manifestations in the form of familiarization with the results of the most famous anthropological research in the 20 century. Lectures are supplemented by seminars where they discuss the form of text analysis and strengthen knowledge of lectures topics.
After successful completion of the course the student will be able to describe a possible approach to the study of cultural adaptability the natural environment and explain the results of anthropological research in relation to this subject; analyse specific examples of arrangements of political power and authority in inter-cultural comparisons; explain the benefits anthropology of law; understand enforcement and legitimisation of social norms and ways of realization of social control; discuss various forms of human economic behaviour.
Prerequisites
The course requires good knowledge of English, because the most of reading materials are not available in Czech language.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Seminar Work

Active participation in class, fulfilling prescribed tasks, home study of chosen literature and systematic seminar work, completion of final test (70% = passing) .
