Course content
1. Nomads and their particular approach toward space / landscape (theory on ?hyletic and eremial? cultures by S. Komárek and Z. Neubauer) 2. Agriculture and sedentarization ? its impact on land use and space understanding ( after I. Hodder, M. Gimbutas, P. Pokorný) 3. Middle Age ? ?Civitas Dei vs. Civitas Terrena?, nature as book of divine symbol, novoplatonism and projections of Eden into landscape and gardens. 4. Renaissance - ?rehabilitation? of nature and human live on the Earth, connection between humans and environment (alchemy, astrology?) the cosmic order and its rexlection in gardening and philosophy, new arts of extensive land use. 5. Baroque ? landscape as a projection of absolutism and Catholicism, phenomenon of pilgrimage and holly landscape. 6. Enlightenment and Romanism (theory of ?picturesque? and ?sublime?, recognition of beauty of wild landscapes and mountains), English gardening, beginnings of tourism and alpinism (Stibral, Schama) 7. Industrialization ? radical transformation of landscape due to exploatation, railway spreeding, industry, transformation of towns and increased human migration. 8. Nazism ? romantic roots of nazism, symbols of forests and wilderness and its impact in politics, animals during nazism, nazi gardens and botanical research (Sax, Schama) 9. Communism ? collectivisation, ecological catastrophs, social realism in the landscape (Jech) 10. 20. Century ? West European approaches: Land art, ecofeminism, deep ecology (B. Binka)

Learning outcomes
The course presents the variability of cultural approaches towards inhabited environment. It shows different fields, on which the interaction between human cultures and enviromnent také part: from the direct physical land use to mythological, philosophical and aestethical approaches. The aim is to present the understanding of the natural Word as a cultural construct with signifiant impacts on human society and ecosystems as a whole.
Students will be able to understand and describe the main approaches towards environment in particular (pre)historic periods, including its reasons and consequences. The landscape and culture relationship will be the key topic. The main streams and theories in environmental studies will be studied in detail, and students will recognize their potencial risk and advantages.
