Learning outcomes
The course introduces history of social and cultural anthropology as a science, as it was developed mostly in Euro-American cultural area from the second half of 19th century, and specifically from the great influence of Franz Boas, until the end of 20th century. The integrative approach to presenting will be applied, relying on combining the history of events and thoughts together with examples of anthropological interests, great figures as main founders different anthropological schools etc. This approach is ideally allowing to differentiate between the very history of cultural anthropology and an overview of anthropological theories, which may possibly go beyond the very history). More detailed overview of anthropological thinking will be rooted in the context of main reversals in history of anthropological history (simplification of evolutionist and diffusionist attitudes - historical particularism - culture as a system - interpretative approaches etc.).
After successful passing the course the student will be able to demonstrate a relatively complex knowledge of social and cultural anthropology: the history of ideas, institutions, development of anthropological methodology, dominating anthropological interests, including the knowledge of great figures - founders of the main anthropological schools. At the same time, he or she will be able - also after going through seminar work with primary texts - to apply an analytical and critical approach, to perceive culture as not constant, but historically relative category, and to be able to discuss the history of culture anthropology as a science.
