Learning outcomes
This course introduces the students to the basic concept of kinship in social and cultural anthropology. By way of this course student will be able to explain the meaning of kinship as a subject in social and cultural anthropology (differences between social and biological kinship, interelatedness of kinship and incest tabu, descent theory, marriage exchange system, and issue of postmarital residence) and its transformation into new kinship studies.
After the successful completion of the course students describe approaches to the study of kinship in anthropological perspective; clarify the relationship between biological and social kinship; examples to clarify familial arrangement in cross-cultural perspective; discuss the role of kinship in contemporary society; apply theories of kinship within anthropological research.
Prerequisites
Students are required to attend the lectures of the course, participate on discussions and study the assigned readings.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Seminar Work

The course requires very good knowledge of English, because the most of reading materials is not avaliable in Czech language.
