Course content
Content: 1. Spanish literature in the 18th and 19th centuries: Classicism, Romanticism, Realism Reading: Mariano José de Larra: Artículos Clarín: La Regenta 2. Hispano-American literature of the period of independence (19th century) Reading: José Hernández: Martín Fierro Rubén Darío: Caupolicán 3. Main tendencies in 20th-century Spanish literature (Generation of 98, Generation of 27, and others) Reading: Miguel de Unamuno: Niebla Federico García Lorca: selected poems 4. Main tendencies in 20th-century Hispano-American literature Reading: Jorge Luis Borges: selected short stories Julio Cortázar: selected short stories 5. Important trends in contemporary Spanish and Hispano-American literature.

Learning outcomes
The objective of the lecture is to familiarise the students with the basic methodology of the study of Spanish-written literature. The students should also get acquainted with the development of this literature.
Basic knowledge of literary history of the era, ability to analyse and interpret selected texts.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of literary history, orientation in the history of Spain and Latin America.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Regular attendance and active participation in lectures and seminars, preparation for each class, and familiarity with the analyzed text(s).
