Course content
The course is divided into several thematic areas: Medieval theatre: Auto de los Reyes Magos. Early modern drama: La Celestina. Renaissance: Juan del Encina, founder of Spanish theatre; Hernando de Ribera, Gil Vicente, and Agustín de Rojas; Garcilaso's Églogas at the end of the early Renaissance. Golden Age: Spanish theatre of the 16th century; Los corrales de comedia, Lope de Vega, and Calderón de la Barca. Leandro Fernández de Moratín and the New Comedy: El sí de las ni?as. Romanticism: Don Álvaro o la fuerza del sino. Esperpento: Valle Inclán, Luces de bohemia. Women in the works of García Lorca: Mariana Pineda, Yerma, Bodas de sangre, and La casa de Bernarda Alba. Alfonso Sastre and Antonio Buero Vallejo: El tragaluz. New trends in Spanish drama.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the main trends in the development of Spanish theatre and its placement within a broader literary and social context. The theoretical part will focus on major movements, authors, and theatrical texts.
The aim of the course is to gain knowledge of the studied literary works within the historical, social, and cultural context of their time.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of Spanish; the course is taught in Spanish.

Assessment methods and criteria
Essay, Student performance, Written exam

Written paper of 5 pages, reading of fiction in Spanish, and reading of scholarly literature in Spanish.
