* Taught in Spanish Through: A) authentic and original historical documents and materials brought by the professor from Spain (newspapers, magazines, coins, stamps, photographs, pamphlets, propaganda instruments, and official documents); and B) audiovisual material (music, videos, film), this course aims to take a cultural journey to 20th century Spain to explore major themes associated with culture, history, and pedagogy of great relevance, applied to Hispanic philology and the needs of the students. 1. HISTORICAL ASPECTS: SECOND REPUBLIC (1931-39), CIVIL WAR (1936-39), FRANCO'S DICTATORSHIP AND PROPAGANDA (1939-1975), TRANSITION TO DEMOCRACY (1975-1982). 2. CULTURAL AND PEDAGOGICAL ASPECTS: A) Second Republic: EDUCATION, PEDAGOGY AND DEMOCRACY (Krausismo, Residencia de Estudiantes and Pedagogical Missions); B) Francoism: AMERICANIZATION, MODERNIZATION AND TOURISM IN THE 60's; C) Transition to democracy: CULTURE AND SUBCULTURE: THE MADRILIAN MOVEMENT PHENOMENA (La MOVIDA): Youth and transgression: subcultures after Franco's death. 3. What is a democracy? Brief exposition of theoretical aspects 4. Thematic proposals from students to investigate specific topics are welcome.
