Course content

1. Introduction to the 20th century Colombian literature: historical context, basic terms, topics and characteristics of the contemporary Colombian narrative. 2. Hidden face of the boom: Gabriel García Márquez´s literary contemporaries. The importance of Carribean coast in the context of Colombian narrative renewal (Álvaro Cepeda Samudio, Héctor Rojas Herazo, Germán Espinoza). 3. New historical novel: La tejedora de coronas (Germán Espinosa). 4. Postmodernism, philosophical background and its reflection in literature. Relationship with the ?boom?. The conception of heterogeneity, history, memory, etc.: Celia se pudre (Héctor Rojas Herazo). 5. Exploring the city. The current ?disapproving? generation: Santiago Gamboa, Laura Restrepo, Jorge Franco, Mario Mendoza. Themes, relationship between fiction and politics. 6. Violence and drug traffic as themes in the Colombian novel: La virgen de los sicarios (Fernando Vallejo), Rosario Tijeras (Jorge Franco). 7. Exile novel. The problems of political and economic emigration - ?Ulysses syndrome?: Síndrome de Ulises (Santiago Gamboa), Paraíso Travel (Jorge Franco). 8. New Carribean novel. ?Dirty realism?. Popular culture and influence of mass media on the contemporary novel: Érase una vez el amor pero tuve que matarlo (Efraim Medina Reyes). 9. Afro-Colombian literature: Changó, el gran putas (Manuel Zapata Olivella). 10. Metaliterature, palimpsest: Basura (Héctor Abad Faciolince). 11. Allegory of the social tension, criticism of power: Angosta (Héctor Abad Faciolince).

Learning outcomes
|
The objective of the course is to familiarize the students with the contemporary literary tendencies in novels written by the most important Colombian authors of ?Post-boom? and Postmodernism. In a brief introduction to the evolution of the Colombian literature of the 20th century, basic trends and its representatives will be presented, however, the main emphasis will be put on the study of current socio-cultural and political situation (guerilla, drug traffic, violence, economic and political emigration, ethnicity, etc.) and its relationship to the narrative strategies. In the theoretical part, the following topics will be dealt with: modern approaches to structural analysis and hermeneutic interpretation of text (transculturation, heterogeneity, deconstructivism, etc.), main postmodern philosophic bases and their manifestations in contemporary Latin American novel. The knowledge will be applied to the analysis of chapters of selected novels.
