Course content
1. History of research on Amerindian languages. Possibilities of classification, the most important Amerindian language families. The present situation, laws about Amerindian languages in different LA countries, bilingual education, Amerindian languages standardization. 2. Mesoamerican language families. History of research on Mesoamerican language families. Mesoamerican literary traditions. Amerindian languages in today's Mexico. 3. Uto-Aztec languages. Classification, the current situation. Phonological, morphological and syntactic features of Uto-Aztec languages. Nahuatl dialectology. Examples of Nahuatl. 4. Oto-Manguean languages. Classification, the current situation. Phonological, morphological and syntactic features of Oto-Manguean languages. Examples of Otomi language. 5. Mixe-Zoquean languages and other minor Mesoamerican language families: Totonacan, Tarascan, Cuitlatec, Tequistlatec. Classification, the current situation. Phonological, morphological and syntactic features of Mixe-Zoquean languages. Examples of Zoque language. 6. Mayan languages. The past and present of Mayan languages, literary traditions. Classification, dialectology of Mayan languages. Examples of Kaqchikel and K'iche'. 7. Language families of Central America: Xinca, Lenca, Misumalpan, Chibchan. Classification, the current situation. Examples of Bocota, Rama, Ngöbere, Kuna languages. 8. Arawacan and Caribbean language family. Classification, the current situation. 9. Other language families of Caribbean, Venezuela and Colombia. Embera, Waunan, Kamsa. 10. Languages of Andean area. Quechua and Aymara, classification, dialectology. 11. Tupi language family. Paraguayan Guarani. Language families of Brazil. 12. Amerindian languages in Chile. Mapudungu, the past and present of the language community. Other language families of the Southern Cone. Languages of Gran Chaco and Tierra del Fuego.

Learning outcomes
The course objective is to expand knowledge of the linguistic diversity of Latin America, of indigenous languages' influence on local variaties of Spanish, and of linguistic theory with cursoric introduction to typologically different languages. Attention is also paid to the current status of indigenous languages and language policies in different Latin American countries.
