Learning outcomes
Historical novel and travelogue are very popular literary genres (subgenres) in the publishing environment. Within the interdisciplinary context, common to literature and history, the combined and comparative study of these two genres (subgenres) within the same elective subject is suitable for the study of Spanish philology (literary module) for the following reasons: A. Diploma thesis. In recent years, there has been a growing interest among some students in writing diploma theses related to historical novels and travelogues (18th-19th centuries) B. The combined study of historical novels and travelogues expands the knowledge of Spanish history and culture. It also strengthens the student's critical and analytical thinking, since in the case of historical novels it requires the ability to distinguish between the depiction of history in a novel and one's own history. C. It helps to understand the process of forming a national identity, since historical novels use symbolic elements of the past and reinterpret them in the present. The historical novel is a cultural artifact that influences the perception of the past (of readers) and which, if successful, can even have an impact on political-nationalist mobilization. Travelogues also offer us a foreigner's perspective on Spanish culture (18th-19th centuries), and therefore encourage reflection on identity regarding how foreigners influenced the formation of Spanish identity and other collective identities. D. It gives the opportunity to study from a theoretical perspective the characteristics and limits of given genres (subgenres) and thus expands the knowledge of other genres (subgenres) that the general study of literature cannot cover in depth in compulsory subjects.
