Course content
The course will concentrate on the most important aspects of political, economic and cultural life of the colonial era, on the liberation process, on the period of the Brazilian Empire, and especially on the Republic, proclaimed in late 19th century. At the end of the course special attention will be given to the development of the country in the past two decades, focusing on social and environmental issues and the development of Brazilian economy. Seminars will focused on the analysis of selected texts in Czech and Portuguese related to the topic. The aim of the course is to explain the process of creating and forming a nation that is not only one of the largest and most populous countries in the world, but which now also starts to belong to important cultural and economic powers. The course is taught in Czech.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this one-semester course is to present the historical development of Brazil, focusing on major milestones of its political and cultural life since the discovery of the Brazilian territory in the early 16th century up to the present. The course is taught in Czech.
